Roots From Another World · Chapter 24 of 30 planned

Story in progress
Roots From Another World, Chapter 24: The Order. The family, Keeper, Seren, and alien guide face a projection of Earth.

The three tones sounded again.

Slow.

Heavy.

Final.

Everyone in the chamber went still.

Seren stared upward.

The soldiers behind her had heard it too.

Whatever doubt had appeared in their faces disappeared almost instantly.

Training took over.

Duty.

Orders.

The largest Concord soldier stepped forward.

Four arms.

Pale armored skin.

Silver markings glowing across its chest.

It looked toward Seren.

Waiting.

Seren didn't move.

Mark stepped closer to Lily.

"What happens now?"

The Keeper answered before Seren could.

"The Council gave its order."

Caleb tightened his grip on the strange metal tool.

"Yeah, we got that part."

He looked at Seren.

"The question is whether she's going to follow it."

Seren's eyes never left the violet roots.

Silver and black remained intertwined beneath Lily's feet.

Not fighting.

Not consuming.

Connected.

Something that should not have been possible.

Something the Concord had spent centuries believing could never exist.

Another tone rolled through the city.

The four-armed soldier spoke in a low clicking language.

Seren answered sharply.

The soldier didn't move.

Neither did she.

Lily felt the tension between them.

"What did he say?"

Seren exhaled.

"That the order is binding."

"And?"

Seren looked at Lily.

"I told him I've heard binding orders before."

The Keeper almost smiled.

Almost.

The four-armed soldier raised one hand.

Silver roots moved beneath the floor.

Mark immediately stepped in front of Lily.

The alien guide moved beside him.

Blue light spread across his body.

Caleb stepped forward too.

Then Elena.

For a moment the chamber divided cleanly.

The Concord on one side.

The family, the Keeper, and their alien guide on the other.

Between them—

violet light.

Seren stood in the middle.

"Don't do this," she said.

The soldier answered.

Seren's jaw tightened.

"He's not talking to you," Lily said.

Seren looked at her.

"What?"

"The soldier."

Lily listened.

Not to words.

To the pattern beneath them.

The silver Network moved through the soldier just as it moved through everything else.

Fear.

Discipline.

Loss.

"He doesn't want to destroy it."

The soldier's head turned sharply toward Lily.

Seren stared.

"You can hear him?"

"Not like I hear the Garden."

Lily looked at the enormous soldier.

"But enough."

The soldier lowered his hand slightly.

The silver roots paused.

That was all it took.

Other Concord soldiers began looking at one another.

Doubt spread faster than any command.

Seren noticed.

So did the Council.

The three tones became one long note.

The city trembled.

Every silver marking on every Concord soldier flared white.

Seren screamed.

She dropped to one knee.

The others followed.

All twelve soldiers collapsed around her.

The Network beneath them surged.

The Keeper rushed forward.

"What is happening?"

Seren clawed at the glowing symbol on her chest.

"The Council."

Her voice broke.

"They're overriding us."

Mark looked around.

"From where?"

Seren forced her head upward.

"Everywhere."

The silver roots rose.

Not from the creature.

Not from Lily.

From beneath the Concord.

They wrapped around Seren's wrists.

Her ankles.

The soldiers beside her were restrained the same way.

Caleb stared.

"Your own people are tying you down?"

Seren laughed bitterly through the pain.

"The Concord stopped being people a long time ago."

Another surge.

Seren cried out.

Lily stepped toward her.

Mark caught her shoulder.

"Wait."

"I can help."

"You don't know that."

"I didn't know I could make the violet connection either."

That answer stopped him.

Lily crouched beside Seren.

The silver roots reacted immediately.

They tightened.

The Garden's signal slammed into her mind.

Not words.

A command.

Preserve.

Lily closed her eyes.

"Preserve what?"

Images came.

Dead worlds.

Burned cities.

Broken Aureliths.

Black roots spreading through soil.

The First War.

Then another image.

Seren.

Young.

Human.

Standing exactly where Lily stood now.

Listening.

Questioning.

Refusing.

Then—

fire.

The memory vanished.

Lily opened her eyes.

She looked at Seren.

"They tried to do this to you before."

Seren went still.

"How did you see that?"

"The Garden showed me."

Seren looked away.

"Then it showed you the part it wants you to see."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

She touched the silver root around Seren's wrist.

The Network screamed into her mind.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

"It's terrified."

Seren stared at her.

"Of him?"

She glanced toward the enormous root creature.

Lily shook her head.

"Of change."

The Keeper whispered, "Of losing control."

The silver roots tightened again.

Seren gasped.

Lily didn't pull away.

Instead, she reached for the violet connection.

The creature noticed.

So did the Garden.

Both voices entered her at once.

One ancient.

One endless.

One afraid of being consumed.

The other afraid of being erased.

"Enough," Lily whispered.

Nothing changed.

She shouted.

"ENOUGH!"

The violet light erupted.

The shockwave threw everyone backward.

Silver roots snapped away from Seren.

Black roots recoiled toward the creature.

The Concord soldiers collapsed onto the floor.

The alien guide caught Lily before she hit the ground.

For several seconds—

silence.

Then Seren started laughing.

Not because anything was funny.

Because she was free.

She stared at her wrists.

The glowing Council symbols were gone.

So were the markings on the other Concord soldiers.

The four-armed soldier slowly rose.

He looked at Seren.

Then Lily.

Then toward the city above.

He ripped the silver emblem from his chest.

It hit the floor.

One by one—

the others did the same.

The Keeper stared in disbelief.

"The Concord is breaking."

Seren stood.

"No."

She looked around at the soldiers.

"The Concord broke centuries ago."

Her eyes settled on Lily.

"We're just finally admitting it."

The chamber shook violently.

Everyone turned.

The creature's eyes had opened fully.

Black roots began pulling away from the walls.

Not attacking.

Retreating.

Toward the central mass.

Elena noticed first.

"It's withdrawing."

Lily felt why.

The creature wasn't afraid of the soldiers.

It wasn't afraid of the Network.

It was afraid of the violet connection.

Because the connection changed the rules.

Seren saw it too.

"What happens if you connect them completely?"

Lily stared at the violet glow.

"I don't know."

"Could it spread?"

"Maybe."

"To other Aureliths?"

"Maybe."

"Other worlds?"

Lily didn't answer.

Seren looked toward her.

"Earth?"

That word hung in the chamber.

Mark stepped closer.

"No experiments involving Earth."

Lily nodded.

"I know."

But the creature spoke.

Only she heard it.

Too late.

Lily froze.

"What?"

The enormous eyes turned toward her.

The path is already open.

Images flooded her mind.

Earth.

Underground.

Darkness.

A tiny black root.

Dormant beneath soil.

Then another.

Another.

Different continents.

Different places.

Waiting.

Lily staggered backward.

Mark caught her.

"What did it show you?"

She couldn't answer at first.

Elena stepped closer.

"Lily?"

"The creature isn't going to Earth."

Everyone stared.

Lily looked at Seren.

"It already did."

Nobody spoke.

Not Mark.

Not Caleb.

Not Elena.

Not even the Keeper.

Seren finally asked the question.

"How long?"

"I don't know."

Lily's voice trembled.

"Maybe years."

"Maybe longer."

The Keeper looked sick.

"The Garden seeded Earth millions of years ago."

Lily nodded.

"What if something followed it?"

Caleb shook his head.

"No."

He backed away.

"No. We're not doing this."

Mark looked at him.

"Caleb—"

"We're standing on another planet talking about roots under our house."

"Nobody said they're under our house."

Caleb looked at Lily.

"Are you sure?"

She wasn't.

That was worse.

A new sound rolled through the chamber.

Not from the Council.

Not from the creature.

From the alien guide.

He raised both hands.

Blue light formed an image in the air.

Earth.

Then several glowing points appeared across the planet.

Silver.

The Garden.

Then—

black.

At first, three.

Then twelve.

Then dozens.

Elena stared.

"Those are active?"

Lily listened.

The guide answered through images.

Not yet.

Dormant.

But awakening.

Seren stepped toward the projection.

"Why now?"

The answer came from the creature.

This time—

everyone heard it.

Not clearly.

Not in words.

But enough.

A deep voice passed through the chamber.

Listener.

Every head turned toward Lily.

Seren understood first.

"They're waking because of you."

Lily's face went pale.

The Keeper shook his head.

"No."

But the creature continued.

The worlds hear what you have joined.

The violet roots pulsed.

The image of Earth flickered.

One black point brightened.

Then a second.

Seren looked at Lily.

"You didn't just create a connection here."

Lily stared at Earth.

"You created one everywhere."

The city shook harder.

Above them, alarms began sounding.

Not the Council tones.

Something older.

Something desperate.

The alien guide turned toward the platform.

Seren followed his gaze.

"We have to get back to the surface."

"Why?" Mark asked.

Seren looked toward the Earth projection.

"Because if the Garden can feel what Lily did..."

She looked at the enormous creature.

"...so can every one of these things."

The Keeper stared upward.

"And they'll all wake."

Seren nodded.

"Unless we stop them."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the violet connection.

"We've spent millions of years stopping them."

Then she looked at the silver Network.

"And millions more stopping the Garden from changing."

She turned toward Earth.

"If we do the same thing again, we get the same war."

Seren stepped closer.

"Then what are you suggesting?"

Lily looked at the black roots.

Then the silver.

Then violet.

"We don't go home to kill what's waiting there."

Mark studied his daughter.

"Then why are we going home?"

Lily looked at the image of Earth.

The black points were growing brighter.

One after another.

"We go home to make sure Earth doesn't become the next battlefield."

The projection vanished.

The platform began rising toward the surface.

Seren stepped onto it.

The former Concord soldiers followed.

The Keeper joined them.

Mark, Elena, and Caleb moved beside Lily.

Their alien guide came last.

Behind them, the creature watched in silence.

Just before the platform began to rise, its voice reached Lily one final time.

Earth will choose.

The platform lifted.

Lily looked down at the violet roots disappearing beneath them.

"No," she whispered.

"This time we will."
