Roots From Another World, Chapter 23: The Army of the Garden. The family, Keeper, and alien guide face Seren and the Concord.

The footsteps above grew louder.

Thousands of them.

The sound traveled down through the city in waves, shaking dust from the ceiling and sending vibrations through the ancient pillars.

Lily stared at the tiny violet glow still trapped between the broken silver and black roots.

For one brief moment, the Garden and the creature had touched without trying to destroy each other.

Now an army had arrived to make certain it never happened again.

"We have to get upstairs," Lily said.

The Keeper shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"If those are who I think they are, you don't want them to see this."

He pointed toward the violet connection.

"Why?" Mark asked.

"Because they'll destroy it."

Another thunderous sound rolled through the chamber.

Closer.

Caleb looked toward the platform.

"Sounds like they're coming down here anyway."

The alien guide suddenly raised his hand.

A blue image appeared in Lily's mind.

The city above.

Hundreds of figures poured through its gates.

Different heights.

Different bodies.

Different species.

Some walked.

Some moved on four limbs.

Others seemed to float inches above the streets.

But every one carried the same symbol:

A silver root wrapped around a black center.

"The symbol from the First War," Lily whispered.

The Keeper nodded.

"The Concord."

Elena frowned. "That's an army?"

"Once, it was an alliance."

"Of who?"

The Keeper looked toward the black roots.

"Everyone who survived."

A metallic sound echoed behind them.

The platform was descending.

Mark stepped in front of Lily.

"How friendly are these survivors?"

The Keeper gave him a grim look.

"They survived because they stopped asking questions."

The platform reached the chamber floor.

Figures stepped from it.

The first was enormous.

Nearly nine feet tall, with four arms and pale armored skin. Silver markings covered its chest.

Beside it walked a smaller creature wrapped in dark red fabric, its narrow head surrounded by a translucent breathing membrane.

Then another.

And another.

Twelve in all.

None carried obvious weapons.

They didn't need to.

The silver roots beneath the floor moved with them.

The Network obeyed them.

At their center walked a woman.

Human.

Mark stared.

So did everyone else.

She looked to be in her fifties, with gray streaks through dark hair and a long scar running from her temple to her jaw.

Her clothing was alien.

Her face wasn't.

Caleb spoke first.

"You've got to be kidding me."

The woman stopped.

Her eyes moved across the group.

Mark.

Elena.

Caleb.

Lily.

Then the Keeper.

"You stayed," she said.

The Keeper looked as though he'd seen a ghost.

"Seren."

The woman smiled without warmth.

"And you got old."

"You didn't."

"No."

That answer hung in the chamber.

Mark stepped forward.

"You're human?"

Seren looked at him.

"I was born human."

"Where?"

She hesitated.

"Earth."

Nobody moved.

Lily felt the world tilt beneath her.

"When?"

Seren studied her carefully.

"By your calendar?"

She thought.

"2041."

Caleb shook his head.

"That's impossible."

Seren looked almost amused.

"You're standing beneath an alien city talking to a planetary root intelligence, and that's where you draw the line?"

Elena stepped closer.

"If you were born in 2041, how are you here?"

Seren's expression hardened.

"The same way you are."

She looked at Lily.

"The Garden brought me."

The black roots shifted.

Every member of the Concord turned immediately.

The enormous eyes in the far wall opened wider.

Seren's calm disappeared.

"Move away from it."

Lily didn't.

"We were communicating."

Seren stared at her.

"No. It was using you."

"It showed me what happened."

"It shows everyone what they need to see."

The creature's voice entered Lily's mind.

She fears what she remembers.

Seren's head snapped toward the creature.

"You can hear it?"

Lily nodded.

Something changed in Seren's face.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"The Listener."

The Keeper stepped forward.

"Seren—"

"Get her out of here."

Silver roots erupted around Lily's feet.

Mark lunged toward her.

The alien guide moved faster.

Blue light flashed across the chamber.

The silver roots stopped.

Every Concord soldier turned toward him.

For one dangerous second, nobody moved.

Then Seren slowly raised her hand.

"Stand down."

The silver roots withdrew.

Mark moved beside Lily.

"Nobody takes her anywhere."

Seren looked at him.

"If you understood what's beneath this city, you'd carry her out yourself."

"I've seen it," Lily said.

"No."

Seren looked toward the enormous eyes.

"You've seen what it wanted you to see."

Lily pointed toward the violet light.

"Then explain that."

Seren finally noticed it.

The chamber became silent.

She approached slowly.

The tiny violet connection still glowed where silver and black touched.

Seren crouched.

For the first time since arriving, she looked uncertain.

"What did you do?"

"I listened."

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

Seren looked at her.

"Because we've been trying for eight hundred years."

The words hit harder than anything else.

The Keeper stared.

"Eight hundred?"

"The Concord never disappeared."

Seren stood.

"We've been holding this thing on worlds across the Garden."

Elena looked around at the soldiers.

"Then why haven't you stopped it?"

Seren's expression answered before she did.

"Because we can't."

The creature spoke inside Lily's mind.

Neither can I stop them.

Two sides.

Millions of years.

Neither capable of winning.

Lily looked down at the violet connection.

"But maybe you're trying to solve the wrong problem."

Seren's eyes narrowed.

"Careful."

"You keep trying to destroy each other."

"For good reason."

"And how's that working?"

Caleb glanced at Mark.

Mark almost smiled.

Almost.

Seren didn't.

"You sound exactly like I did."

Lily froze.

"What?"

Seren stepped closer.

"When the Garden brought me here, I thought being a Listener meant I was supposed to understand both sides."

The Keeper stared at her.

"You were a Listener?"

Seren looked toward him.

"Why do you think I left?"

That changed everything.

A violent impact shook the chamber.

One of the black roots smashed through a distant pillar.

The Concord reacted instantly.

Silver light raced across the floor.

Black roots rose to meet it.

"STOP!"

Lily's voice echoed through the chamber.

Nothing stopped.

So she did something else.

She reached for both.

Not physically.

She listened.

The Network filled her mind with millions of frightened signals.

The creature answered with ancient terror and hunger.

Lily pushed deeper.

She found the place where the two signals overlapped.

Then held them there.

Pain exploded through her head.

She screamed.

Mark caught her as her knees buckled.

Every light in the chamber went out.

Black.

Silver.

Blue.

Everything.

Absolute darkness.

Then—

Violet.

A single line appeared beneath Lily.

It spread outward.

Slowly.

Across the floor.

Wherever it passed, silver roots stopped attacking.

Black roots stopped moving.

The violet line reached the Concord.

Their markings changed color.

It reached the alien guide.

His blue light became violet.

It reached the Keeper.

Then Seren.

Seren stared at her glowing hands.

"No."

The line continued.

Straight toward the creature.

The enormous eyes watched it approach.

For the first time—

they looked uncertain.

The violet light touched the central black root.

The entire city shook.

Then silence.

Complete silence.

Lily opened her eyes.

And heard something she had never heard before.

Not the Garden.

Not the creature.

Both.

Together.

One voice.

Broken.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

Help us.

Seren heard it too.

Lily knew from her face.

"You heard that."

Seren didn't answer.

"You heard it."

Finally, Seren nodded.

The former Listener looked toward the creature she had spent centuries fighting.

Then toward the Network she had spent centuries defending.

Her certainty was gone.

Above them, thousands of Concord soldiers waited for orders.

Below them, an ancient enemy waited for destruction.

And between them stood Lily.

Seren looked at her.

"What do you think happens if you're wrong?"

Lily looked at the violet roots surrounding them.

"I don't know."

"And if you're right?"

Lily stared toward the enormous eyes.

For the first time, they no longer looked hungry.

They looked tired.

"Then maybe the First War can finally end."

A new sound echoed through the chamber.

Not footsteps.

Not roots.

A signal.

Three slow tones from somewhere high above.

The Keeper's face changed.

"What is that?"

Seren looked upward.

Her expression hardened.

"The Concord Council."

"What do they want?"

Seren turned toward Lily.

"They know what you've done."

Another three tones sounded.

"And they've ordered me to kill the connection."

The violet light pulsed beneath Lily's feet.

Seren looked at the soldiers behind her.

Then at Lily.

For the first time in eight hundred years—

the former Listener had to choose again.
