Roots From Another World, Chapter 25: The Road Back to Earth. The travelers stand before the Worldroot Gate and its view of Earth.

The platform rose through the ancient city.

Nobody spoke.

Below them, the creature remained buried beneath thousands of feet of stone and living roots. Above them, the golden towers of the forgotten civilization stretched toward the alien sky.

But Lily wasn't thinking about the creature.

She was thinking about Earth.

Somewhere beneath its forests, fields, and cities, two ancient forms of life were beginning to awaken.

And she might have been the reason.

Mark stood beside her.

"We'll figure this out."

Lily looked at him.

"How?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That frightened her more than anything.

Because Mark always had a plan.

This time, he didn't.

The Keeper stood near the edge of the platform, watching the glowing walls slide past.

"There's something you need to understand about the Aurelith."

Caleb sighed.

"Please tell me it's something useful."

The Keeper looked at him.

"It doesn't simply connect places."

Elena turned.

"What do you mean?"

"It connects worlds."

The platform stopped.

The doors opened.

Sunlight poured across them.

And beyond the platform stood the alien city, now completely awake.

Golden lights flowed through its towers. Bridges shimmered above enormous streets. Strange flowering structures unfolded along the buildings, releasing clouds of luminous particles into the air.

The city was beautiful.

But something was wrong.

Far beyond its walls, a dark line had appeared across the valley.

The plants nearest it were folding inward.

Retreating.

Seren stepped beside Lily.

"The awakening is spreading."

"Here?"

Seren nodded.

"And on Earth."

They crossed the city quickly.

The alien guide led them through enormous archways toward a circular structure near the central tower.

Unlike the surrounding buildings, this one was covered in living roots.

Silver.

Blue.

And now—

Violet.

Elena stopped.

"Those weren't here before."

Seren shook her head.

"No."

The Keeper approached the nearest root.

He touched it carefully.

The violet light brightened.

"It followed us."

Caleb looked around.

"Great. Now we're leaving glowing footprints everywhere."

But Lily understood something different.

The violet roots weren't following.

They were spreading.

Wherever silver and black had touched without attacking, a new connection had formed.

And those connections were beginning to communicate.

She knelt beside one.

The moment her fingers approached, a sensation entered her mind.

Not a voice.

A direction.

A place.

Earth.

Lily stood suddenly.

"I know how we get home."

Everyone turned.

"The Aurelith."

The Keeper nodded slowly.

"Perhaps."

Seren looked troubled.

"There's a problem."

Mark folded his arms.

"Of course there is."

Seren pointed toward the circular structure.

"The passage between worlds was closed after the First War."

"Then how did we get here?" Elena asked.

Seren hesitated.

"That's what worries me."

The Keeper stared at her.

"The Garden brought them."

"Yes."

"But the Garden doesn't open passages without a reason."

Lily looked toward the violet roots.

"Maybe it knew Earth was waking up."

Seren shook her head.

"Or maybe something on Earth called you here."

That possibility silenced everyone.

Inside the circular structure stood an enormous ring.

Not metal.

Not stone.

Living tissue.

Thousands of intertwined roots formed a perfect circle nearly fifty feet high.

Its center was empty.

Beyond it, a dark wall reflected nothing.

The alien guide approached.

Blue light spread across his body.

The ring answered.

Silver veins illuminated one after another.

The entire structure began humming.

Caleb stared upward.

"Please tell me that's the way home."

The Keeper nodded.

"The Worldroot Gate."

Elena stepped closer.

"How does it work?"

Seren answered.

"The Garden establishes connections between worlds through microscopic seeds. Over time, those connections grow into living pathways."

"Through space?" Caleb asked.

"Not exactly."

She gestured toward the ring.

"The roots don't stretch between planets. They connect distant locations through something the ancient civilizations understood far better than we do."

Mark studied the empty center.

"So this thing opens a doorway?"

"When the connection is strong enough."

Lily looked toward Seren.

"And Earth?"

Seren's expression darkened.

"The Earth connection has been dormant for millions of years."

"But it's waking."

"Yes."

The Keeper approached the ring.

"Then perhaps the gate can reach it."

The alien guide raised both hands.

Blue light surged into the living structure.

The ring brightened.

A shimmering surface appeared inside it.

For one incredible moment, Lily saw stars.

Thousands of them.

Then a planet.

Blue.

White.

Green.

Earth.

Caleb shouted.

"That's it!"

Mark stepped forward.

"Can we go through?"

The image flickered.

Then vanished.

The ring went dark.

The alien guide staggered backward.

Lily felt the failure immediately.

The connection wasn't strong enough.

Seren lowered her head.

"I was afraid of that."

The Keeper studied the ring.

"Something is preventing the passage."

Elena looked toward the violet roots growing along the floor.

"The black system?"

"Possibly."

Lily closed her eyes.

She listened.

The silver Network was everywhere.

It moved through the city, the valley, the Aurelith, and countless distant organisms across the planet.

But the black roots were present too.

And beneath both—

a faint violet signal.

Lily followed it.

Farther.

Beyond the city.

Beyond the Aurelith.

Across a darkness she couldn't describe.

Then—

Earth.

She felt something.

Small.

Weak.

Almost silent.

A living signal beneath the surface.

Silver.

Then another.

Black.

Neither was moving aggressively.

Neither was spreading through cities.

They were simply waking.

Lily opened her eyes.

"Earth isn't under attack."

Seren looked at her.

"Not yet."

"No."

Lily shook her head.

"That's not what I mean."

She looked around at the others.

"Both systems are waking, but they haven't started fighting."

The Keeper considered that.

"Because they've been dormant together."

"Exactly."

Elena understood.

"Then Earth might be different."

Lily nodded.

"The Garden and the creature have been enemies for millions of years. But on Earth, neither has been active long enough to establish control."

Seren stared at her.

"A world without a First War."

"Not yet."

Lily looked toward the dark gate.

"And maybe it never has to happen."

A low vibration passed through the room.

The violet roots brightened.

Lily felt something unexpected.

A response.

Not from the Garden.

Not from the creature.

From Earth.

She turned toward the ring.

"Wait."

Everyone stopped.

"Something heard us."

The Keeper stepped closer.

"What?"

Lily closed her eyes again.

The signal was faint.

Almost impossible to distinguish.

But it was there.

A rhythm.

Three pulses.

Pause.

Three pulses.

The same rhythm repeated.

Elena watched the violet roots.

"They're flashing."

Three pulses.

Pause.

Three pulses.

Caleb stared.

"Is that supposed to mean something?"

Lily shook her head.

"I don't know."

The Keeper's expression changed.

He moved toward the ring and placed his hand against its surface.

"That's not a warning."

Seren looked at him.

"Then what?"

"A response."

The Keeper stared into the dark center.

"Something on Earth is trying to establish a connection."

Mark stepped forward.

"Something?"

The Keeper nodded.

"Or someone."

The ring suddenly illuminated.

This time the light was violet.

Not silver.

Not blue.

Violet.

The empty center filled with swirling light.

Earth appeared again.

But instead of showing the planet from space, the image moved downward.

Through clouds.

Across mountains.

Over forests.

Toward a small clearing surrounded by trees.

The image sharpened.

Mark froze.

Elena covered her mouth.

Caleb stepped forward.

"No way."

They recognized it.

The structure.

Their shelter.

The place where their journey had begun.

The same ground where they first discovered the strange translucent plant.

The image moved closer.

Something was growing beside the entrance.

A tiny plant.

No taller than a hand.

Its leaves were translucent.

Its veins glowed faintly violet.

Glassleaf.

Lily stared in disbelief.

"How?"

The Keeper stepped beside her.

"Perhaps the connection never closed."

The image shifted.

A shadow moved across the clearing.

Mark leaned forward.

"Who's there?"

The figure came into view.

Human.

Wearing ordinary clothing.

Carrying a small pack.

The stranger knelt beside the glowing plant.

Then looked directly toward them.

Not at the plant.

Not at the ground.

At them.

As though looking through the gate.

Caleb whispered, "Can they see us?"

The stranger raised one hand.

The violet roots surrounding the gate brightened.

Then the figure spoke.

The words were faint.

Distorted.

But unmistakably human.

"Can anybody hear me?"

Lily stepped forward.

"Yes!"

The image flickered.

The stranger looked startled.

"Who's there?"

Mark grabbed Lily's shoulder.

"Ask where they are."

But Lily already knew.

The clearing.

The shelter.

Their first garden.

The stranger leaned closer.

"If you're receiving this, don't shut it down."

Seren stepped toward the gate.

"Who are you?"

The stranger's expression changed.

They looked over their shoulder.

Something had caught their attention.

The violet plant beside them folded its leaves.

The image began breaking apart.

"Listen carefully," the stranger said.

"There's something growing here that shouldn't be."

Lily felt the black signal beneath Earth brighten.

Not violently.

Not yet.

But unmistakably.

The stranger looked back toward the gate.

"We thought it was just another plant."

The image flickered again.

Then came the words that silenced everyone.

"It started answering us yesterday."

The connection vanished.

The Worldroot Gate went dark.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Caleb looked at Mark.

"Well, at least we know somebody's home."

Nobody laughed.

Lily stared at the empty ring.

She had spent so long trying to understand the Garden that she'd almost forgotten what it meant to be afraid of an ordinary-looking plant.

But that was how everything had started.

One strange plant.

One unexplained movement.

One family wondering what was happening beneath their feet.

Now another person was standing in that same clearing.

And something on Earth was beginning to listen.

Mark looked toward Seren.

"Get that gate working."

Seren nodded.

The Keeper placed both hands against the living roots.

The alien guide stepped forward.

Blue light spread through the ring.

And Lily closed her eyes.

She reached toward the distant violet signal.

Not commanding.

Not forcing.

Listening.

Far away, beneath the soil of Earth, something answered.

The gate began glowing again.

This time—

it stayed open.
