Hosta ‘Chinese Dragon’ is a massive and striking hosta introduced by Winterberry Farms and Jim Anderson as a sport of ‘Komodo Dragon’. Though not registered, this cultivar is highly regarded for its size, upright habit, and bold medio-variegated foliage.

The large leaves feature a golden yellow center that gradually softens and fades toward green as the season progresses, bordered by a strong green edge. This viridescent color change adds seasonal interest and depth to the foliage. Plants originated from a streaked form of ‘Komodo Dragon’, which remains available only in limited supply, giving ‘Chinese Dragon’ added collector appeal.

At maturity, ‘Chinese Dragon’ forms an impressive clump reaching approximately 29 inches tall and up to 72 inches wide, with leaves measuring up to 15 inches long and 10 inches wide. Its upright, vigorous growth habit makes it a commanding focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens.

White flowers appear above the foliage, and the plant is fertile, making it useful not only as a specimen but also in breeding programs. ‘Chinese Dragon’ is also notable as the parent of the seedling ‘Stegosaurus’.

A powerful, architectural hosta best suited for gardeners and collectors seeking dramatic scale and evolving foliage color.
