The doorway remained open.
Golden sunlight poured into the chamber, washing across the living roots in a warm glow none of them had seen since arriving on the planet.
It felt... impossible.
Everything inside the Aurelith had been illuminated by silver-blue veins and bioluminescent light.
This was different.
Natural.
Alive.
Caleb stepped closer to the opening.
"I thought we'd left the outside world behind."
"So did I," Elena replied.
The Keeper never moved.
His eyes remained fixed on the valley beyond.
"I've stood in front of this doorway many times."
Mark looked at him.
"And?"
"It never opened."
Everyone turned toward him.
"Never?"
The Keeper slowly shook his head.
"I believed it was only another memory."
Lily stared through the opening.
The mountains beyond seemed familiar somehow.
Not because she had seen them before...
Because they felt familiar.
A gentle breeze drifted through the doorway.
Unlike the air inside the Aurelith, it carried a scent.
Fresh rain.
Wild flowers.
Growing forests.
The living roots surrounding the doorway slowly withdrew, widening the passage as if welcoming them.
The ancient voice spoke once more.
Not from the chamber.
Not from the walls.
From everywhere.
"Continue."
The Keeper lowered his head.
"I've waited longer than I can remember to hear that word."
Mark looked at him.
"Then you're coming with us."
The Keeper hesitated.
"I don't know if I can."
"Why not?"
He slowly extended his hand toward the sunlight.
The moment his fingers crossed the doorway...
they began glowing.
Not painfully.
Softly.
The silver veins beneath his skin brightened.
The Keeper quickly pulled his hand back.
"I've become part of the Aurelith."
Silence settled over the chamber.
"I don't know what exists beyond that doorway anymore."
Lily stepped beside him.
"You've spent your whole life protecting this place."
The Keeper smiled sadly.
"And now it no longer needs protecting."
She looked at him.
"Maybe it still needs you."
The old man closed his eyes.
For the first time in decades...
He took a step.
One foot crossed the threshold.
Nothing happened.
Another step.
The glowing veins beneath his skin faded.
His shoulders relaxed.
He laughed.
It wasn't loud.
It wasn't joyful.
It was the laugh of someone carrying a burden for so long that they had forgotten what freedom felt like.
"I..."
His voice trembled.
"I can leave."
Caleb grinned.
"Well, that's one mystery solved."
The Keeper smiled.
"No."
He looked toward the valley.
"It only created another."
The five stepped through the doorway together.
The instant Mark crossed the threshold, he stopped.
The world before them was unlike anything they had imagined.
Towering forests of crystal-barked trees shimmered beneath twin suns that hung low in the sky.
Waterfalls floated upward instead of down, rising into clouds that glowed with soft shades of blue and gold.
Broad fields of flowering plants slowly turned as they followed the movement of the light overhead.
Insects with translucent wings drifted silently between blossoms the size of boats.
Far in the distance...
Something moved.
Massive.
Graceful.
Its long neck rose above the forest canopy before disappearing again.
Elena whispered the only words she could find.
"This whole world..."
The Keeper nodded.
"...is alive."
Lily slowly knelt.
A tiny flowering plant near her feet folded its petals inward.
Not in fear.
In greeting.
She smiled.
"Hello."
The flower opened again.
Mark noticed something else.
There were no glowing paths.
No guiding lines.
No Network beneath the soil.
Just living ground.
Freedom.
Caleb laughed.
"We're finally on our own."
The Keeper's smile disappeared.
"No."
He pointed toward the distant mountains.
High above them, carved into the side of a towering cliff, stood an impossible structure.
Not natural.
Not grown.
Built.
Gigantic pillars reached toward the sky.
Bridges connected massive stone towers.
The entire city seemed abandoned.
Yet sunlight reflected from windows that shouldn't have remained intact after countless ages.
Elena stared through her binoculars.
"That's a city."
The Keeper slowly nodded.
"I've seen it."
Everyone looked at him.
"You've been there?"
"No."
He looked troubled.
"I've seen it..."
"...in the memories."
The ancient voice whispered once more across the valley.
Fainter now.
Almost carried by the wind.
"The Garden remembers."
Mark looked toward the distant city.
Then at the vast unexplored world stretching before them.
They thought the Aurelith had been the destination.
Instead...
It had only been the gate.
