No one moved.
The glowing path waited.
The Keeper stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the tunnel that had illuminated itself.
Lily swallowed.
"It called my name."
"It did," the Keeper replied quietly.
"But... how?"
The old man looked at the living walls surrounding them.
"The Aurelith doesn't speak."
Mark frowned.
"Then what did?"
The Keeper's face grew pale.
"I've spent decades hoping I'd never learn the answer."
Another pulse rolled through the chamber.
This one was different.
The glowing veins weren't carrying light anymore.
They carried sound.
A low vibration echoed through the walls like distant voices whispering beneath flowing water.
Elena placed her hand against the living surface.
She jerked it back immediately.
"It's vibrating."
"No," the Keeper corrected.
"It's singing."
Caleb looked at him.
"You're telling me this whole planet sings?"
The Keeper slowly nodded.
"The Network has always communicated."
"We just never understood the language."
The glowing path pulsed again.
Lily looked down.
Instead of glowing steadily, the light now flowed forward in slow waves, almost like it was breathing.
"It wants us to follow."
Mark looked at the Keeper.
"You don't seem surprised."
"I've been waiting for this."
"You expected it?"
"No."
The Keeper sighed.
"I feared it."
Silence settled over the chamber.
Finally, Mark stepped onto the path.
Nothing happened.
Then Elena followed.
Caleb hesitated before joining them.
Lily stepped onto the glowing line last.
The reaction was immediate.
Every vein inside the chamber burst into brilliant silver-blue light.
The walls awakened.
The floor trembled.
Far above them, somewhere inside the living body of the Aurelith, something enormous shifted.
Not walking.
Turning.
The entire structure groaned with ancient life.
The Keeper whispered only one word.
"Awake."
The path carried them deeper.
The tunnel narrowed before opening into another chamber unlike anything they had seen.
There were no walls.
At least none they could recognize.
Instead, thousands of living roots intertwined overhead, forming a vast dome that disappeared into darkness.
The roots glowed softly, each carrying rivers of moving light.
In the very center stood a single column.
It wasn't stone.
It wasn't wood.
It looked almost like crystal grown from living tissue.
Inside the crystal, light flowed upward endlessly.
Like liquid stars.
Lily couldn't look away.
"It's beautiful."
The Keeper didn't answer.
His eyes were fixed on the base of the column.
Mark followed his gaze.
There were handprints.
Dozens of them.
Some human.
Some with six fingers.
Some impossibly large.
Every one glowed faintly within the crystal itself.
Elena stepped closer.
"They're inside it."
"They're remembered," the Keeper said.
"The Network never forgets those who touched the Heart Column."
Caleb frowned.
"The what?"
"The first root."
The words echoed through the chamber.
The first root.
Mark looked upward.
"So everything..."
The Keeper nodded.
"Every path."
"Every memory."
"Every living vein."
He placed a trembling hand against the crystal.
"They all began here."
The crystal suddenly brightened.
Lily gasped.
One handprint began glowing brighter than all the others.
Not one already inside the crystal.
A new one.
Her own.
Slowly forming beneath the surface.
She hadn't touched it.
Yet.
"What is that?" Elena whispered.
The Keeper stepped backward.
"No..."
Lily stared at the glowing outline.
"It's mine."
The crystal answered.
A deep pulse exploded outward through the chamber.
The roots above them lit up one after another like lightning spreading across the ceiling.
The entire Aurelith awakened.
Far beyond the chamber, deep beneath the planet's surface, the Network answered.
The vibration rolled outward for miles.
The Keeper looked genuinely terrified.
"It chose."
Mark grabbed his shoulder.
"What chose?"
The old man could barely speak.
"The Heart."
The chamber fell silent.
Then the voice returned.
Not loud.
Not frightening.
Gentle.
Ancient.
Every word echoed through the living roots.
"Listener..."
Lily's eyes widened.
"Come home."
The crystal burst into brilliant white light.
Every handprint inside it glowed.
Every root in the chamber awakened.
The path ahead opened.
Not like a tunnel.
Like a doorway unfolding from living tissue.
Beyond it...
There was daylight.
Real daylight.
Not the dim glow inside the Aurelith.
A warm golden sky.
Mountains.
Forests.
An entirely different landscape.
Caleb stared in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
The Keeper slowly lowered his head.
"I've never seen that before."
Mark looked at the doorway.
Then at Lily.
Then back toward the impossible world waiting beyond it.
The voice spoke one final time.
Soft.
Patient.
As though it had waited thousands of years for this moment.
"The journey begins now."
The doorway remained open.
Waiting.
