Roots From Another World, Chapter 7: The Path Changed Overnight. Four family explorers study a changed path beneath two moons.

Mark noticed it before anyone else stepped outside.

The line was gone.

Not all of them.

Just the one they had followed the day before—the stable path that had carried them safely through the field. The faint green glow that had stayed steady beneath their feet had vanished completely.

In its place sat bare, dark ground.

Still.

Empty.

Wrong.

“Elena,” he called quietly.

She stepped up beside him, still pulling her jacket tighter against the cold morning air. Her eyes dropped immediately to the missing path.

“That’s not possible,” she said.

“It’s gone.”

Caleb pushed past them both. “Maybe it moved.”

“That’s worse,” Elena replied.

Lily stood silently near the doorway, staring farther out into the field.

“There’s another one,” she said softly.

Mark followed her gaze.

She was right.

About twenty feet farther to the east, a faint glow pulsed beneath the surface—thin and narrow, weaving through the ground where there hadn’t been any visible path before.

Not random.

Placed.

“It changed the route,” Caleb said.

Mark didn’t like how naturally he said it.

Like they had already accepted the idea.

He stepped carefully toward the new line, stopping just short of it.

The glow brightened slightly beneath the surface.

Responding.

Waiting.

Elena folded her arms. “It knows we noticed.”

Caleb let out a short laugh. “You say that like it’s alive.”

No one answered him this time.

Because none of them were really debating that anymore.

Mark crouched slowly, watching the line beneath the surface.

It wasn’t glowing constantly.

It pulsed.

Like a rhythm.

Almost like breathing.

Lily stepped closer.

“It wants us over there now,” she said.

Mark looked out across the field again.

The old route remained dark and lifeless.

The new one stretched deeper into unfamiliar ground.

Further than they had gone yet.

“That’s intentional,” Elena said quietly.

“Yeah,” Mark replied.

Caleb crossed his arms. “So what happens if we ignore it?”

Mark stood slowly.

“We find out carefully.”

He stepped sideways instead of forward, deliberately avoiding the new path.

The ground reacted instantly.

A sharp pressure rolled beneath the surface near his boot—not enough to trip him, but strong enough that he felt it push against the sole of his foot.

He stepped back immediately.

The pressure disappeared.

“Okay,” Caleb said quietly. “I felt that.”

Mark stepped onto the glowing line instead.

Nothing happened.

The pressure vanished completely.

The path brightened.

Lily watched it carefully. “It likes agreement.”

“That’s a sentence I never wanted to hear,” Caleb muttered.

Elena scanned the field again.

“It’s narrowing our options,” she said.

Mark nodded once.

Yesterday there had been several visible paths.

Today there was one.

And it led exactly where the others hadn’t wanted to go.

Deeper.

He took another step forward.

The line beneath him stayed calm.

Elena followed.

Then Lily.

Caleb hesitated longer than the others.

The path dimmed slightly beneath him until he finally stepped onto it too.

Only then did the glow stabilize again.

“That’s creepy,” Caleb said.

“No,” Mark replied quietly.

“This is organized.”

They moved slowly through the field, following the winding line deeper than they had traveled before. The farther they went, the stranger the surrounding growth became.

The low plants were taller here.

Thicker.

Some of them folded inward slightly as the group passed, like they were reacting to movement or vibration.

None of them crossed into the path itself.

Almost like they respected it.

Or feared it.

The thought hit Mark harder than he wanted to admit.

Then Lily stopped walking.

Immediately, the glow beneath the group dimmed.

“Keep moving,” Mark said quickly.

Lily didn’t answer.

She was staring ahead.

“What is that?” Elena whispered.

At first, Mark thought it was stone.

A massive dark shape sat partially buried ahead of them just beyond the edge of the path. Smooth. Curved. Larger than any plant structure they had seen so far.

Then the surface shifted.

Not the object.

The ground around it.

Thin glowing lines pulsed outward from beneath the buried structure like veins feeding into the surrounding field.

Caleb stared at it. “That’s not a root.”

“No,” Elena said quietly.

“It’s connected to them.”

The path beneath their feet brightened again.

Stronger this time.

Almost urgent.

Mark noticed something else immediately.

The path curved around the buried structure.

Not toward it.

Around it.

Like it was being intentionally avoided.

“Don’t leave the line,” he said.

Caleb frowned. “You think that thing’s dangerous?”

“I think the path doesn’t want us near it.”

Lily took a slow step backward.

The buried shape responded.

A faint pulse traveled through the surrounding ground instantly, spreading outward through the glowing network beneath the surface.

Every nearby plant reacted.

Leaves tightened.

Stems shifted slightly inward.

The field itself seemed to tense.

Then—

A sound.

Not loud.

Not sharp.

A deep vibration beneath the ground, almost too low to hear clearly.

But they all felt it.

Caleb’s face changed immediately. “Okay. Nope.”

Mark didn’t disagree.

“Back up,” he said calmly.

No one argued.

They moved carefully backward along the path.

The vibration faded almost immediately.

The plants relaxed.

The glow softened.

Silence returned.

But now the silence felt different.

Heavier.

Watching.

Mark kept his eyes on the buried shape until distance and darkness swallowed most of it from view again.

“That wasn’t random growth,” Elena said quietly.

“No,” Mark replied.

Lily looked down at the path beneath them.

“It didn’t want us there,” she whispered.

Mark thought about that carefully.

Because the path hadn’t stopped them from reaching it.

It had only stopped them from stepping off.

Like it wanted them to see it—

But not approach it.

Caleb shook his head slowly. “So what is this place?”

No one answered.

Because every answer they had only made things worse.

The glowing line beneath their feet pulsed again softly, guiding them back toward the structure.

Mark stared at it in silence for a long moment.

Then finally said the thing none of them wanted to admit yet.

“It’s deciding what we’re allowed to see.”
