Roots From Another World — Chapter 13: The Watcher

Roots From Another World · Chapter 13 of 30 planned

Story in progress
Roots From Another World, Chapter 13: The Watcher. The four family members face the hooded Watcher inside the Aurelith.

The sound came again.

Scrape.

Metal against stone.

Soft.

Distant.

But unmistakable.

The Chamber of Echoes fell silent immediately.

The glowing memory figures vanished.

The symbols on the platform dimmed.

Even the living walls of the Aurelith seemed to pause.

Mark slowly turned toward the darkness beyond the chamber.

"Everybody heard that?"

No one answered.

Because they had.

Caleb's flashlight was already pointed toward the far side of the room.

For the first time since arriving on the planet, he wasn't the one pushing forward.

He looked uneasy.

"What if we're not alone?"

Mark didn't answer.

Because that was exactly what he was thinking.

The sound came again.

Closer this time.

Scrape.

Pause.

Scrape.

Like something being dragged.

Or someone walking carefully.

Lily stared into the darkness.

"It knows we're here."

Caleb immediately looked at her.

"The Network?"

She shook her head.

"No."

That answer bothered everyone.

Mark looked across the vast chamber.

The glowing floor stretched outward beyond the reach of their lights.

The memories were gone now.

Only darkness remained.

Waiting.

The passage on the far side of the chamber seemed different than the others.

Older.

Less alive.

The glowing veins within the walls were weaker there.

Fainter.

As if fewer memories traveled that direction.

Mark finally moved.

"Let's go."

Nobody argued.

The four crossed the chamber slowly.

Every footstep echoed.

Every sound felt louder than it should.

The circular platform remained behind them.

Silent now.

Watching.

The farther they moved from it, the darker the Aurelith became.

The living glow within the walls faded to thin silver threads.

The passage narrowed.

Twisted.

Bent around massive braided structures that disappeared into the darkness overhead.

Then Elena stopped.

"Wait."

Everyone froze.

She crouched near the floor.

Something rested beside the wall.

Small.

Metallic.

Mark picked it up carefully.

It resembled a tool.

Not one they recognized.

The surface was worn smooth by years of use.

One edge carried faint markings.

Not symbols from the platform.

Different markings.

Different language.

Caleb stared.

"That's not ancient."

Mark looked up.

"No."

The metal showed scratches.

Recent scratches.

Recent use.

Someone had handled it.

Recently.

The silence suddenly felt much heavier.

Lily's flashlight moved farther ahead.

Toward the floor.

"There's more."

A footprint.

Not glowing.

Not preserved.

Fresh.

Pressed into a thin layer of dust.

Mark crouched beside it.

Human-sized.

Or close enough.

The edges remained sharp.

Undisturbed.

Not old.

Not ancient.

Fresh.

Caleb looked over his shoulder immediately.

"Okay. I officially don't like this."

Nobody laughed.

Because now they knew.

Someone else was inside the Aurelith.

Not centuries ago.

Now.

They continued deeper.

The corridor branched several times.

Yet somehow the glowing path beneath the floor remained clear.

Leading them onward.

Always onward.

Then Lily stopped again.

The wall beside her glowed brighter.

A cluster of symbols pulsed faintly beneath the living surface.

Mark stepped closer.

The symbols activated.

Not fully.

Just enough.

A memory flickered briefly.

A figure appeared.

Not one of them.

Tall.

Thin.

Standing in this very corridor.

The image lasted less than a second before fading.

But it was enough.

Elena saw it too.

"Did you see that?"

Mark nodded slowly.

The figure had been studying the wall.

Touching the symbols.

Using them.

Someone had been accessing the memories.

Recently.

The corridor widened again.

Opening into another chamber.

Smaller than the Chamber of Echoes.

More intimate.

More deliberate.

The walls curved inward around a circular room.

At the center stood a single structure.

Mark couldn't immediately identify it.

It looked almost like a chair.

Almost.

The shape appeared grown rather than built.

Living material intertwined into a seat-like form facing the center of the room.

The glowing veins beneath it pulsed softly.

Caleb approached first.

Then stopped.

The seat was warm.

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

He placed his hand against it again.

"It's warm."

The room fell silent.

Mark felt the chill immediately.

Someone had been sitting there.

Not yesterday.

Not hours ago.

Recently.

Very recently.

The glowing veins beneath the seat brightened.

Then dimmed.

Like a heartbeat slowing.

Lily stared into the darkness beyond the chamber.

"He's here."

The word hung in the air.

Not it.

Not something.

He.

Mark slowly turned.

His flashlight swept across the room.

Nothing.

Just darkness.

Then—

A voice.

Behind them.

Close.

Far closer than it should have been.

Not threatening.

Not angry.

Just tired.

Very tired.

"You came faster than the last group."

All four spun around.

The flashlight beams crossed.

For a moment they illuminated nothing.

Then a figure stepped partially into the glow.

Tall.

Thin.

Wrapped in weathered clothing unlike anything they had seen.

His face remained mostly hidden in shadow.

But his eyes reflected the light.

Watching them calmly.

Like he'd been expecting them.

For a very long time.

Caleb backed up immediately.

Mark stood frozen.

The stranger studied them one by one.

Then his gaze stopped.

On Lily.

The silence stretched.

The stranger nodded slowly.

Almost sadly.

"There you are."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because somehow...

That sounded a lot less like a greeting.

And a lot more like recognition.
