The path never wavered.
For the first time since arriving on the planet, the glowing route beneath their feet remained completely stable.
No branches.
No corrections.
No sudden changes.
Just a broad river of light stretching across the field toward the massive silhouette waiting on the horizon.
Whatever stood ahead, the Network wanted them to reach it.
The farther they walked, the quieter everything became.
The smaller plants disappeared first. Then the shifting lines beneath the surface grew sparse. Even the faint vibrations that had become part of the landscape faded away.
It felt less like entering another section of the field.
And more like entering a place that had been set apart.
Caleb noticed it too.
"It's too quiet."
No one answered.
Because he was right.
Mark kept his eyes on the enormous shape ahead.
For days it had looked like a distant hill.
Then a structure.
Then something alive.
Now, standing close enough to see its details, he realized it was larger than any of those.
The thing towered over the surrounding landscape.
Massive leaves overlapped in layered arcs hundreds of feet above them. Their surfaces shifted between silver, blue, and faint violet depending on the changing light. Rivers of glowing veins moved through them continuously.
Not sap.
Not water.
Light.
The entire organism seemed illuminated from within.
Elena stopped walking.
"That's impossible."
Mark couldn't disagree.
The base rose from the ground like a cluster of enormous braided columns twisting together toward the sky. Each column was wider than a road, and every glowing line they had followed across the field seemed to disappear into it.
The Network didn't just lead to this organism.
It belonged to it.
Lily stared upward without blinking.
"Aurelith," she whispered.
Mark looked at her.
"What?"
She didn't look away from the towering plant.
"Aurelith."
Caleb swallowed hard.
"You just made that up?"
Lily shook her head slowly.
"No."
Elena turned toward her.
"Then where did it come from?"
Lily's eyes stayed fixed on the glowing veins moving through the massive leaves.
"I don't know," she said. "But that's what it wants to be called."
No one spoke after that.
The name settled into the silence like it had always been there.
Aurelith.
The broad path beneath them brightened.
Not urging them forward.
Welcoming them.
The four continued walking.
As they approached the base, the scale became harder to understand. Leaves larger than houses stretched overhead. The braided columns supporting them rose like living towers. The air beneath the canopy was cooler, stiller, almost protected.
Then Elena stopped suddenly.
"Mark."
He followed her gaze downward.
The ground near the base of the Aurelith was covered in glowing impressions.
Footprints.
Not theirs.
Not recent.
Ancient.
Hundreds of them.
Some looked close to human.
Others didn't.
Some had four toes. Some had six. Some were long and narrow. Others were wide and heavy.
Every set disappeared into the glowing network beneath the surface.
Caleb stared.
"Tell me those aren't what I think they are."
Mark couldn't.
Because they were.
Someone had been here before.
Many someones.
A very long time ago.
The Network had remembered them too.
Lily knelt near one of the impressions, her fingers hovering above it without touching.
"It remembers everyone."
No one argued.
The evidence glowed beneath their feet.
Mark slowly turned in a circle.
The field hadn't been guiding them randomly.
It had guided others too.
Maybe for generations.
Maybe for centuries.
Maybe longer.
The Aurelith wasn't just the center of a garden.
It was the center of something much older.
Something intentional.
Then one of the giant leaves moved.
All four froze.
There was no wind.
No vibration.
No obvious cause.
Yet one enormous leaf slowly lifted.
Not much at first.
Just enough for darkness to appear beneath it.
At first, Mark thought it was shadow.
Then he realized it wasn't.
It was an opening.
Perfectly shaped.
Perfectly centered.
Deliberate.
The glowing path beneath their feet brightened at once. The light streamed directly toward the opening.
Caleb took a step back.
"No."
No one looked at him.
They were all staring at the same thing.
The opening wasn't natural.
The edges were too smooth. Too precise. Too intentional.
Elena's voice was barely above a whisper.
"Something made that."
The leaf continued rising.
Slowly.
Patiently.
Like a curtain being pulled aside.
The darkness inside waited.
Not empty darkness.
Depth.
Space.
Purpose.
The Network pulsed once beneath their feet.
Soft.
Steady.
Certain.
Mark looked at the glowing path disappearing into the darkness.
"The field wasn't leading us to this place," he said.
Elena glanced at him.
"No?"
Mark slowly shook his head.
"It was leading us to whatever's inside."
Caleb stared at the opening, his face pale in the strange light.
"And we're supposed to just walk in?"
The path pulsed again.
No one answered.
Because the answer had already been given.
